You’re Not in High School Anymore: The Pros and Cons of Dating in College

By Uloop Guest Writer on March 23, 2015

Dating in college is much different than dating in high school. It was simpler, and smiling at the cute girl or guy scored you a date for Friday night. Welcome to the big leagues. Dating while you’re attending college is another ball game.

Sure, you know of the frat parties, the late ‘study’ nights, and popular clubs everyone hits up in college. But, did you know college dating is on a different level? It’s not as easy as it was in high school. And everyone has a tendency to be in each other’s business.

Want to know the best and worst things about dating during your college years? We give you the pros and cons of dating in college and how to make the most of it.

1. The Number of Hookups Increases

In college, you do more adult things than you did in high school. You’re required to act as any adult would and with most adult relationships, hookups are the norm.

The Good: Casual hookups and one-night stands are more common than actual long-term relationships in college. Now, hookups can be a good thing, especially if you’re looking to score multiple dates with several interesting men or women without any strings.

The Bad: Casual hookups can be crushing and heartbreaking for college singles seeking a meaningful or long-term relationship. You don’t know if that guy is just seeking his next conquest, or if that girl just wants to tally how many guys she’s kissed this week.

Not everyone is ready for a commitment at this point in their young lives.

2. Rep Matters More in College than High School

During your high school years, you can gain quick rep by being the most popular, unique, or strange teenager. But when you reach college, all that takes a back seat.

The Good: You’re expected to present yourself professionally when you reach college. By presenting yourself in the manner you want to be treated, you’ll gain respect and admiration from your college peers. Being confident and acting like a responsible adult rather than a teenager improves your reputation and impresses the men and women you want to attract.

The Bad: Acting like a teenager during your college life will gain you no respect and more annoyance from your peers. You also have a better chance of attracting the wrong person for you.

Those times of wearing tons of make-up, texting or sexting, and being the bad boy or brooding gothic kid are gone. Maintain your high school days in college, and you’re guaranteed to earn the worst reputation.

3. Dormitory and Co-ed Living

It’s exciting to go to a college where you’ll be living on campus. It’s a perfect opportunity to hook up fast, get many dates and have a place to enjoy sex.

The Good: Dorm living is fun, and you can invite girls or guys over to your place. It’s the perfect place to cuddle, kiss, and even have sex. It’s not your parent’s house, and you can invite whoever you want, whenever you want.

The Bad: What’s not so great is that your roommate has access to this place, so privacy needs to be timed or discussed prior to bringing over company.

Moreover, it’s also not a good idea to suggest your girlfriend or boyfriend to move into your dorm with you. It just doesn’t work, and it can cause a strain on your relationship and your roommate.

You can make dating in college work, but remember that you’re dealing with mature individuals and not inexperienced teenagers.
