We are a culture obsessed with celebrities, the red carpet and gossip magazines. We look to hundreds of movie and television stars for fashion advice and ideas. There are even pages dedicated to “Who Wore it Best?” and what dresses were the fan favorites at reward shows.
Today’s celebrities range from the modern classy looks of Taylor Swift, to the creatively outrageous outfits of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, to the sophisticated grace of Olivia Pope. Fans looking to capture the essence of their favorite singer’s or actor’s sense of style just need to purchase a few look-alike outfits.
Of course, looking to celebrities for fashion advice has been a long-lasting tradition. Stars of the past were able to influence the fashions of their time. Today, much of their contribution to style still exists. With some modern alterations, you can get inspiration from these famous past stars and add some flair to your wardrobe.
Audrey Hepburn: It’s no secret that Audrey Hepburn serves as one of the most popular fashion icons of all time. She was a very successful actress and her elegant sense of style made her stand out of the crowd.
Some of the most popular fashions that she wore include the “little black dress,” which is still a crucial piece of attire today, stylish sunglasses with any outfit, and cute, floppy hats. She also wore form-fitting, silhouette clothing, fashionable gloves, high collars, belts that cinched around the waist, and the bold, red lip.
Hepburn often wore pants at a time when skirts and dresses were the more accepted forms of attire for women. She knew how to add a touch of class and femininity to everything she donned.
Grace Kelly: Though Grace Kelly’s acting career was fairly short, she was very successful. Her put-together and classic style also helped boost her popularity. She wore long coats, scoop necks, capri pants, chiffon scarves, simple and beautiful jewelry and gloves. Though some other actresses in the 1950′s wore flashier clothing, Kelly opted to create a more serious, sophisticated look. For this reason, much of her graceful style has carried on through the years and is still relevant today.
Stevie Nicks: This singer’s style is certainly unique and seems to perfectly match the music she creates. The Huffington Post calls her fashion “bohemian mystique.” It’s the perfect description for her top hats, lace, billowy and draping clothing and shawls. You can see much of her sense of style in the world of fashion today. The popularity of the bohemian craze continues and articles of clothing like kimonos, patterned pants, shawls and flowing pieces match Stevie’s style.
Amelia Earhart: When you think about Amelia Earhart, the first thing to come to mind probably doesn’t have to do with fashion or clothing. You think about her successes in aviation, her breakthroughs as a woman pilot, her solo journey across the Atlantic Ocean and her disappearance in the Pacific Ocean during an attempt to circle the globe.
Since she was a celebrity in her time, the people paid attention to her style. Her clothes were sensible and simple, yet still had a feminine essence to them. She even had a fashion line called Amelia Earhart Fashion. Many of the items resembled the flight clothes that Amelia wore on the job, including leather coats and windbreakers. The material the clothes were made out of were often washable and wrinkle-free.
Jackie Kennedy: This First Lady really knew how to dress. Like many famous fashion icons, she kept her look simple and clean. These qualities made her look classy and timeless. Many stores like J.Crew carry clothing similar to what Jackie Kennedy might have worn. Her pillbox hats, head scarves, big and fashionable sunglasses, the color white, shifts, and Lilly Pulitzer clothing all contributed to the classic and pulled together look that Kennedy created.
Princess Diana: Princess Diana was a beloved public figure, known for her fund-raising and charity work. But she was also known for her keen sense of style. She was glamorous and individualistic. At first, Diana’s style was more conservative, but she began to dress with more boldness and sophistication as she became more of a public figure. She had big hair and wore color-blocked suits, shoulder pads, one-shouldered dresses, the little black dress, and the much more casual jeans and button-downs in her free time.
Just because these celebrities had their prime in a different time doesn’t mean that their sense of style is outdated. Many of the fashions that were popular in the past are coming back or can still be incorporated into today’s popular trends.
Though you may look too much like a blast from the past if you completely replicate some of these women’s outfits, you can choose a piece or two to focus on. You can also choose clothing lines that resemble what these celebrities might wear today. Looking classy, elegant and sophisticated in the same way that these public figures and stars were able to do will never go out of style.
